Basic Program
Swedish Massage

This 125 hour Basic program course emphasizes the benefits and effects of massage therapy. It provides you with practical touch-related skills in one of the foundational arts of the profession—Swedish massage. A highly practical and effective art, Swedish massage is based upon scientific principles that are presented in other courses within the Basic Program, which we'll discuss in the following pages.

Here, in your study of the Swedish method, you'll learn how to give a thorough and enjoyably relaxing 55-minute basic therapeutic massage. In addition to hands-on skills, this course will help you develop an appropriate professional vocabulary and an appreciation for the ethics of the profession. You'll also gain valuable insight from the latest research into various topics—such as the causes of back pain—and learn about the equipment and supplies available for your practice.

In this course you'll learn
  • Hand coordination
  • Stretching and warm-up techniques
  • Basic massage strokes
  • Joint movements
  • Self-massage techniques
  • The proper way to receive a massage
  • The steps in conducting a session
  • Proper draping and propping techniques
  • How to recognize medical contraindications
  • Record keeping
